The 4 mm Revolution

Updated: Mar 10

🌟 Once in the stunning Canarias for a zygomatic meeting. A warm and amazing venue where i had the chance to meet extraordinary people!

I found myself at a round table buzzing with experts in bone vertical augmentation and zygomatic techniques!

🎉 We were all fired up, debating the best approach to the lower posterior mandible! 🙌 I was in awe as I witnessed the incredible mental nerve lateralization and the latest in guided vertical Autogenous bone block regeneration! The skills on display were absolutely mind-blowing! 🤯 Free gingival grafts and titanium meshes were flying through the auditorium—what a sight! And let’s not forget the autogenous bone showcased in 4K videos; I could almost smell it! 😄

My lecture? It was all about the straightforward brilliance of 4mm short implants! 🚀 The Straumann engineering team has an incredible mindset, crafting solutions that significantly lower patient morbidity! And yes, we’re talking about teeth—not heart surgery, but still super important on a macro level! 💪

They’ve developed an implant set that responds beautifully to biology—enhancing macrogeometry to ensure maximum bone-to-implant contact, allowing these implants to thrive under heavy loads! 💥

At the end of our round table, the host threw out a challenge:

"Hey, if you were in your own mouth with just 5mm of bone left, what would you do?"

😮 To my surprise, the lateralization expert replied, "4mm!!!" The Italian (I still was really amazed by the vertical augmentation slides), echoed, "4mm!" I was completely surprised by the answers ......

And guess what? I agreed! 🙌

This is the wild world of our dental (dentist) minds—when it’s someone else’s mouth, we pull out all the stops for those ultra-surgical, fancy, high morbidity, time and money consuming procedures! But in MY mouth? I’m not even sure that tooth needs extraction! Just bring on those speedy 4mm implants! 😁.

Just look around and see the surrounding examples in your practice, have a deep breath, and be honest with yourself. You know it's true.

Remember, be a dentist, but ALWAYS put yourself in the patient’s shoes when making decisions for others! 💖

And yes ..... it's still 90 % after 10 years in splinted well controlled occlusion... (in case you are going to ask me about literature)
